Slicing a printable model, processing a scan and creating a CNC toolpath are different operations. Identify the files you start with and the result you need before comparing software. A viewer may open a file without providing the editing or export functions required by your workflow. Check the relevant feature list for the specific edition and licence.
Check compatibility and terms
Verify the supported operating system, hardware requirements and any machine-specific connection requirements. Check whether a licence is perpetual or time-limited, how many devices or users it covers and which updates are included. Do not infer commercial-use rights or a school-wide entitlement from the product name. Ask for clarification before ordering if a term is not explicitly documented.
Plan the complete workflow
Consider how files move between design, preparation and machine control. Confirm formats and export features at each stage, particularly when using scans or third-party models. Keep a record of your licence details and the version used for a production workflow. When available, use the manufacturer’s documented evaluation process to check the required features before committing to a purchase.
